Where are the parathyroid glands commonly found?

- The parathyroid glands are usually found on the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland.

- There are 2 on each side.

- The parathyroid glands produce parathyroid hormone, which plays a large part in calcium homeostasis.

- The inferior parathyroids originate from the 3rd pharyngeal pouch embryologically, along with the thymus.

- During development, these may be drawn down into the mediastinum along with the thymus.

- The superior parathyroids derive from the 4th pharyngeal pouch, and are less variable in their position.
