What is the blood supply to the thyroid gland?
- The superior part of the thyroid gland is supplied by the superior thyroid artery, a branch of the external carotid artery.
- The inferior part of the thyroid gland is supplied by the inferior thyroid artery, a branch of the thyrocervical trunk, itself a branch of the subclavian artery.
- In addition, in around 10% of people there is a thyroid ima artery that branches directly from the brachiocephalic trunk.
