What function do the strap muscles perform?

- The strap muscles are the sternothyroid, sternohyoid, thyrohyoid and omohyoid muscles.

- They act to depress the hyoid bone and larynx during swallowing and speaking.

- The strap muscles, also know as the infrahyoid muscles, are all innervated by parts of the ansa cervicalis, except for thyrohyoid, which is innervated by C1.

- The ansa cervicalis is a loop of nerves (C1 - 3) that forms part of the cervical plexus. It is superficial to the internal jugular vein in the carotid sheath.
